Trachoma elimination project in Machinga district of Malawi |
Children washing their faces with clean water
Heart-to-Heart International Malawi visited Mawimba village - one of the many villages in Machinga District,
Malawi - to take a closer look at the water situation in the villages.
The lives of the villagers that they saw at that time were absolutely heart-breaking.
As there were no proper water facility in the village, people including children and
pregnant women had to travel far to get water out of dirty puddles or streams.
Not only did it take a long time for the stream to fill up,
but also because it was far away, people would set off early in dawn to get water,
which frequently led them to accidents such as being bitten by snakes.
People traveling far for water
Unsafe water in puddles
Seeing such a poor situation, Heart-to-Heart International Malawi established a borehole to the people of Mawimba village.
The construction started on December, 2016 and was completed on February of 2017.
The new borehole brought a big change in the lives of the villagers in Mawimba.
They no longer have to travel far to get water and are able to use safe water as well.
Access to clean and safe water is an essential element of sanitation and health,
therefore it is a big role for people to get away from diseases such as Trachoma.
Enelesi(30) says “Her baby no longer has to suffer from diarrhea and
that she can wash nappies with clean water now.”
Kadija(47) expressed gratitude saying,
“She is now comforted by the fact that she can take showers and wash clothes with clean water.”
The borehole became a big help for the people in Mawimba village.
, as there are a lot of people living in the village, there is still much need of access to clean water.
Please keep your attention and encouragement towards people so that they can use safe water and
prevent themselves from infectious disease.
