[Community based WASH improvement project in Machinga District]
- Sustainable toilet model created by the wisdom of the communities -
From 9-12 April, HtHF Malawi organized a session for on sustainable sanitation facility with community memebrs from four(4) TAs; Ngokwe, Adamson, Mizinga and Mtumbwinda within Machinga District. During the activity, participants shared various know-how of members who have been maintaining and using latrine for more than six years without any collapse by heavy rain and cyclones.
Let us introduce how they built a solid toilet!
Do you remember the previous Malawi updates, the news of ODF (Open Defecation Free) certification of Chikweo, Mizinga TAs?
HtHF introduces Sanitation Marketing to build a solid toilet so that ODF-certified villages can continue their ODF status. As a first step of Sanitation Marketing, communities analyzed the main causes of the toilet collapse and sought ways to apply them widely in the region by sharing the materials and various methods.
What is Sanitation Marketing?
To help community memebers easily build a toilet, by connecting the material sellers and masons to build solid toilets at reasonable prices.
Specific ideas were discussed among members and the following three(3) commonalities were identified.
Finally, HtHF buildes up Sanitation Marketing Framework appropriate for TAs, using the UNICEF‘s 7 steps Sanitation Marketing framework.
This session corresponds to ‘Phase 1. Sharing the succesful cases‘, and we will continue our activities step by step,
including adopting an applicable model at an appropriate cost, implementing a sanitation marketing pilot, and monitoring activities.
Please look forward to the next story of which skill will be adopted among the various methods discussed through this sharing session!
